This fall home painting checklist covers what to inspect before winter. Before winter arrives, check your home for peeling paint, cracked or missing caulk, bare wood and soft or rotting trim. These small openings let water into siding and window frames, and freeze-thaw cycles in Massachusetts make the damage worse each month. Fixing them in the fall is usually quick and far cheaper than spring repairs.
Your Fall Home Painting Checklist
- Peeling or cracking paint on siding, especially on south- and west-facing walls that get the most sun.
- Bare wood on window sills, door frames and railings, where water soaks in fastest.
- Failed caulk around windows, doors and trim corners. Gaps or brittle caulk let in water and drafts.
- Soft or rotted trim at the bottom of door frames, corner boards and sills.
- Gutters that overflow onto siding and trim.
- Mildew on shaded walls, which should be cleaned before any painting.
- Decks and railings where stain has worn through.
What Can Still Be Done in the Fall?
Caulking, scraping and spot-priming bare wood can often be done on mild fall days. Small trim repairs and touch-ups can be painted when temperatures stay above 50°F, or above 35°F with paints made for cold weather. Full exterior repaints are best planned for spring if the weather window has closed. Read more in our guide on when it is too cold to paint outside.

Use the Winter to Plan
Fall and winter are a good time to get an estimate for a spring exterior repaint and to schedule interior painting, which is not affected by cold weather.
They also exceeded all the quality and project management metrics. I would highly recommend for any interior or exterior project.

Look for peeling paint, bare wood, cracked caulk, soft or rotted trim, overflowing gutters and worn deck stain. These let water in and get worse with freezing and thawing.
Many exterior caulks can be applied in cool weather, but check the product label for its minimum temperature, and apply it to a clean, dry surface.
If daytime temperatures are regularly below 50°F, a full exterior repaint usually lasts longer if done in spring. Small repairs and spot-priming can still be done in the fall.
